Gardening in Gaucín: mountain weather and big trees
Gaucín has colder winters and more rain than the coast, and frost is possible on clear nights. Spring growth is strong, so grass and scrub can become tall very quickly. By summer it dries out completely, which is why fire-prevention clearing is so important on country plots.
Old olive trees, cork oaks and other large trees give shade and character, but heavy branches over roofs, paths and power lines should be checked regularly.
- Keep tracks and access roads cut back so they stay open in summer.
- Prune olive trees in late winter, once the worst frosts have passed.
- Protect tender plants in pots from frost, or move them to a sheltered spot.
- Check terrace walls after heavy rain and clear the drains so water can run off.
- Look over old oak and chestnut branches after storms and remove any that are cracked.
