Gardening in Sotogrande: lawns, hedges and old trees
Sotogrande is close to the Strait of Gibraltar, so wind is a regular visitor. Lawns and hedges grow strongly here in spring and need frequent cutting to stay neat. Old cork oaks and pines give welcome shade but need careful pruning and plenty of room around their roots.
- Mow more often in spring, when grass grows fastest.
- Trim long hedges in spring and late summer to keep a clean line.
- Avoid paving or driving heavy machines over the roots of old cork oaks.
- Check the irrigation in May, before the long dry season starts.
