San Roque lies close to the Strait of Gibraltar, so the Levante and Poniente winds shape daily life in the garden. Strong gusts dry out soil and pots, snap young branches and push tall hedges out of line. In the Guadiaro valley the ground is greener and growth is faster, which means more mowing and trimming in spring.
- Stake new trees firmly and check the ties after each windy spell.
- Trim hedges on exposed boundaries so the base stays wider than the top.
- Leave plenty of space around old cork oaks, and never pile soil or gravel against their trunks.
